A phlebotomist is a type of medical technician who specializes in taking blood samples from patients through vein perforation or micro techniques. Requirements to be certified
Candidates to be certified as phlebotomists must have a high school diploma or GED certification, complete a specialized program and take a certification exam. The program must be accredited by the United States Department of Education, by a Regional Certification Commission or must have a program that includes at least 120 hours in a classroom and 120 hours of clinical practice. Those who have not completed their studies but have at least 1,040 hours of acceptable work experience as a phlebotomist technician within the last three years, are also eligible to take the exam to become certified.
Certification
Certification to be a Certified Phlebotomist Technician or TFC (RTP) can be obtained through a recognized certification organization. Some states, such as California, New York and Florida, require a separate state certification, but most states do not have this requirement. The American Medical Technicians (AMT) is an internationally recognized certification agency that certifies medical technicians in different disciplines, including phlebotomists. Some others include the American Association of Medical Personnel, The National Association of Health Careers and the American Society of Clinical Pathologists. Candidates must first apply to take the exam and pay the registration fee. Since the application has been accepted, The exam is performed in special facilities. When the exam is passed, the phlebotomist will receive his certification. An annual fee is required to maintain active certification.
Continuing education
To remain certified, the phlebotomist is required to provide evidence of successful continuing education courses. This continuing education is usually paid by the employer. According to the National Phlebotomy Continuing Education Organization’s survey in the article “100 of the Best Companies to Work For” of the Fortune Magazine, 55 percent of employers paid between 21 and 40 hours of training for their phlebotomists; 34 percent paid between 41 and 80 hours of training and 8 percent paid more than 80 hours of training.
