Keep in mind that when you cancel AMEX products, you renounce benefits such as the “Membership Rewards” program, smart shopping systems, flexible payment plans, discounts and promotions at the best establishments.

If you have a credit card product with any outstanding balance, the Community Outreach Coordination and AMEX’s Consumer Credit Counseling Service recommend not cancelling the product without paying in full the balances owed and saving the respective support.

You can call the American Express customer service centre to cancel your card. According to your location, the service numbers may change. The recommendation is that you always dial the telephone numbers that appear on the back of the credit or service card, write them down in your address book, Smartphone or computer.

If you can not find your American Express card and have a secure Internet connection you can write to email [email protected] you must include in your cancellation request information such as:

  •       First and last name as it appears on the card.
  •       The last 4 digits of the card.
  •       A contact phone
  •       A contact time range, this for Pervasive purposes.

If you do not have access to the Internet, then call the customer service centre of the lender according to the location:

Tell the operator that you want to cancel your card. The American Express representative may try to keep your products. If you are determined to cancel your charge or credit card, then politely decline any request from the operator.

Once the telephone contact is made, you must wait to receive a letter via email confirming the closure of your account. It is recommended that you print and keep a copy of the letter for your files.

When you certify that you have cancelled your American Express credit card or debit card, get rid of the plastic, destroy it. It is best to cut the card to prevent anyone from accessing your account numbers and personal information.

Review your Equifax, Experian or TransUnion credit reports by month or after the account is closed.

You can also get a free annual credit report from each of the credit bureaus by visiting www.annualcreditreport.com. (In the U.S)

In the report issued, check that the American Express card you ordered to cancel appears as “closed by the consumer.” If the account does not reflect the closure or reports a “closed credit by grantor” status, contact American Express again to correct the information.
