How to verify a MoneyGram

MoneyGram is used by people to send money to other people around the world. To send a MoneyGram you must complete a form and pay the necessary fees to complete the money transfer. Once the transfer has been completed, MoneyGram will establish procedures that will allow the recipient to verify the transfer to determine if the money is available for you to pick up.

Talk to the person who sent you the MoneyGram to make sure the money has been sent. Ask the person how long it has been since they made the money transfer. Ask them for the eight-digit reference number, the amount of money they sent, and any secret questions and answers that may appear on your money transfer for security purposes.

Wait 10 minutes after the time the money order was actually sent.

Dial (800) 666-3947 from a touch tone telephone. Talk to the auto attendant to “Check transaction status.”

Enter the “Reference Number” or “Sender’s Phone Number” to check the status.

Enter the sender’s reference number or phone number. You will then be informed if your money is available for pickup.

Visit a MoneyGram agent near you. You can find a list of locations near you by visiting their website. You can also get a list of locations by calling money orders. Be sure to bring a valid photo ID with you. Depending on your location, the photo ID you have should be one that has been issued by the government, such as a driver’s license, military ID, state ID, or passport. If you don’t have a photo ID, providing the answer to the secret question the sender provided may be enough.

Wait to receive the payment of your money transfer.
