What is MetroPCS?

The former Metro PCS is now known simply as Metro by T-Mobile, due to its acquisition by the North American giant and Telekom.

At its initial launch in 1994 it was christened General Wireless Inc. and provided prepaid wireless telecommunications service within the United States.

By February 2005, the company had 1.5 million subscribers, and its operations covered Atlanta, Dallas, Detroit, Miami, Sacramento, San Francisco, and Sarasota.

Later in 2007, Metro PCS would make its official public debut with a $50 million IPO and a final price per share of $27.40.

In October 2012, the company reached an agreement to become part of T-Mobile USA and the deal was completed the following year. At the time of the merger, the acquiring company had a portfolio of 32 million clients and MetroPCS contributed 9 million more.

In 2018, T-Mobile would announce the relaunch of Metro and a series of benefits that we will see below.

Overview of Metro by T-Mobile plans

You should know that Metro uses the 5G network that T-Mobile has established in North American territory. Although the company has cheaper plans with limited data of 2GB and 10GB per month, these products include several unlimited services:

  • calls
  • Text messages
  • high speed data

Like T-Mobile’s ‘On Us’ plan, Metro has free add-on services for those who subscribe to its unlimited plans. These unlimited offers give you:

  • Free Amazon Prime Membership (Unlimited Plus)
  • Free storage on Google One 5 or 15 GB for hotspot
  • $10 discount on the basic plan when you switch carriers
  • Video streaming capped at 480p and slower when you exceed 35GB of data download

As for the 2GB plan, it doesn’t give you any additional services and costs you $30 a month for a line. If you decide to go up to 10GB, you have to pay $10 more, but you get ‘unlimited music’, which allows you to listen or watch your favorite artists on 40 different platforms.
